The benefit-realization review: closing the loop after launch

Business cases are written once and rarely revisited. A scheduled review turns forecasts into learning.

Without a follow-up, nobody knows whether the promised benefits arrived, and the next business case repeats the same optimism.

Run it at 3 and 12 months

  • Compare actual results with the baseline and the original claim.
  • Compare actual run cost with the estimate.
  • Record what drove the difference.
  • Decide: continue, adjust, expand or retire.
  • Feed the lessons into the next proposal.

Make the review owner someone outside the delivery team, so the assessment is independent.
