KPMG's Q2 2026 AI Pulse: agent deployment plateaus as cost visibility lags

A quarterly survey of large US organizations finds flat agent deployment, rising employee resistance and weak visibility into what AI costs to run.

KPMG's Q2 2026 AI Pulse, released on 24 June 2026, surveyed 204 US C-suite and business leaders at organizations with revenue of $1 billion or more, between 28 April and 25 May 2026. It is a US sample and a small one.

Findings

  • Agent deployment stood at 53%, against 55% the previous quarter.
  • Organizations orchestrating multiple agents across workflows rose from 9% to 18%.
  • Planned 12-month AI investment averaged $202 million, against $207 million last quarter.
  • Only 26% have full, real-time visibility into what AI systems cost to run, and 36% have direct token or usage controls.
  • Employee resistance to agents was reported at 20%, up from 5%.
  • In banking, employee adoption of agents was reported at 56%, up from 23% in Q1.

What it suggests

The easy deployments are done, and the next phase is harder: cost control, change management and orchestration. AI cost visibility is an immediate gap, and a practical place to start.
