The modernization business case: price the cost of doing nothing

Executives compare a project's cost to zero, but staying put has its own bill. How to put the cost of delay on the page.

Legacy estates cost money every year: scarce skills, workarounds, slow change, outage risk and missed opportunities. A fair business case compares the project with the ongoing cost of the current state.

Costs to include

  • Run costs — licences, hosting and support for the old stack.
  • Change costs — how long and how expensive a simple change is today.
  • Risk costs — outage exposure and dependence on a few people.
  • Opportunity costs — products and integrations that can't be built.

Use your own figures from tickets, invoices and delivery records. A case built on measured costs is far harder to dismiss.
