Red-teaming your own AI system before someone else does

A structured attempt to break your system finds problems cheaply. How to run one with limited time.

Red-teaming means deliberately trying to make the system misbehave: leak data, ignore rules, take unsafe actions. Doing it internally lets you fix issues before users or attackers find them.

A practical plan

  • Define what 'failure' means: data exposure, policy breach, unsafe action, harmful output.
  • Assemble a mixed group — security, domain experts and someone unfamiliar with the design.
  • Try instruction override, hidden instructions in documents, requests for other users' data and misuse of tools.
  • Record each attempt, the result and a severity.
  • Fix, add the cases to your test set and re-run.

Make the attack cases a permanent regression suite. Any change to the model, prompt or tools should pass them again.
